You have four real options for where to stay during a surgical recovery in Colombia: a hotel, an aparthotel, a short-term rental apartment, or a recovery house. Each has genuine advantages and genuine drawbacks. The right answer depends on your procedure, whether you are traveling solo or with a companion, how long your recovery stay will be, and how much structured support you want during it.

We are going to walk through each one honestly, including the things the listings will not tell you.

The Four Options

Hotel

Typical range: $40-$120/night (3-4 star, Medellin)

Hotels are the most familiar option and the easiest to book. For short recovery stays of three to five days after low-complexity procedures (LASIK, dental work, some rhinoplasties), a hotel can work well. You get daily housekeeping, front desk staff who can help with taxis, and air conditioning in a city where most apartments do not have it.

Where hotels fail for surgical recovery is in the kitchen. Most hotel rooms do not have one. After abdominal surgery, breast augmentation, or any procedure where you need to eat protein-forward meals at irregular hours, relying entirely on room service and delivery is expensive and nutritionally limiting. Hotel beds are also typically designed for comfort rather than the firm, elevated sleeping positions some recoveries require.

Works for: Short stays (under 5 days), low-complexity procedures, patients who value daily cleaning and front-desk support, patients with generous budgets.

Doesn't work for: Longer recovery stays, patients who need a kitchen, budget-conscious travelers, procedures requiring specialized sleeping positions.

Aparthotel

Typical range: $45-$90/night (Medellin)

Aparthotels give you the best of both worlds when they are good, and an awkward compromise when they are not. The concept is a hotel-managed unit with a kitchenette, living space, and hotel-style services like front desk, cleaning, and sometimes laundry. They are widely available in El Poblado and increasingly common in Laureles.

The key question with any aparthotel is the kitchen. Some have a full kitchen with a stove, oven, and full-size refrigerator. Others have a microwave, a mini-fridge, and a two-burner electric cooktop. The difference between those two setups is significant for a two-week stay. Ask specifically before booking. The other advantage of aparthotels is consistent quality. Unlike individual apartment rentals where condition varies widely, aparthotels tend to be newer buildings with reliable elevators, hot water, and internet.

Works for: Stays of one to three weeks, patients who want kitchen access with hotel-style management, companion travelers who want separate sleeping and living areas.

Doesn't work for: Patients on tight budgets (cheaper than hotels but still more than apartments), patients who want the full independence of their own apartment.

Short-term rental apartment

Typical range: $30-$100/night depending on neighborhood and quality

A private apartment booked through a rental platform or directly from a local property manager. This is the most flexible option and often the most cost-effective for stays longer than a week. You get a full kitchen, your own space, and the ability to control your environment completely.

The tradeoff is variability. No two apartments are the same. The listing photos may not reflect current condition. The building may have an unreliable elevator. The shower may be a cold-water electric head rather than a gas heater. The mattress may be soft when you need firm. All of these variables are manageable if you vet the listing properly (use our 14-point checklist), but they require more research than booking a hotel or aparthotel.

The other consideration is support. When something breaks at 10 p.m., you are contacting a property manager on WhatsApp, not walking to a front desk. Some managers respond in minutes. Others respond in hours. Responsiveness during the booking inquiry phase is a reliable predictor of responsiveness during your stay.

Works for: Budget-conscious travelers, longer stays (one to four weeks), patients who want full kitchen and independence, companion travelers, patients who have done this before.

Doesn't work for: First-time visitors who want structured support, patients uncomfortable with the research required, solo travelers after high-complexity surgery who need on-site help.

Recovery house

Typical range: $80-$200/night (Medellin, 2026)

Recovery houses are purpose-built or converted lodging designed specifically for post-surgical patients. They typically bundle accommodation with nursing checks (scheduled visits, not 24-hour bedside care), prepared meals, airport and clinic transport, and sometimes lymphatic drainage massages. Most operate in El Poblado. A few exist in Laureles. They cater primarily to cosmetic surgery patients, though some accept patients recovering from other procedures.

At their best, recovery houses solve the coordination problem that solo travelers face: someone checks on you, feeds you, drives you to appointments, and knows what post-op complications look like. At their worst, they are converted apartments with an owner who added "nursing care" to the listing without any medical training or staff credentials.

"Recovery house" is not a regulated term in Colombia

Anyone can use it. There is no licensing requirement, no inspection regime, and no minimum standard for nursing qualifications. This does not mean all recovery houses are untrustworthy. Many are excellent. It means you must vet them the same way you would vet any medical service: ask who provides the care, what their qualifications are, whether a nurse is on site or on call, and what happens if you need emergency help at 3 a.m. Ask your surgeon which recovery houses their patients have used and trusted. A clinic-endorsed recommendation carries more weight than any online review.

Works for: Solo travelers after cosmetic surgery, patients who want structured post-op support, patients willing to pay a premium for convenience, first-time visitors who want everything handled.

Doesn't work for: Tight budgets, patients who value privacy and independence, companion travelers (many recovery houses are set up for solo patients), patients recovering from non-cosmetic procedures (the food and care protocols are often optimized for cosmetic recovery).

The Cost Comparison

For a 14-night stay in Medellin, here is what each option typically costs in total:

OptionNightly rate14-night totalIncludes
Hotel (3-star)$50-$80$700-$1,120Room, cleaning, front desk. No kitchen.
Aparthotel$55-$90$770-$1,260Room, kitchenette, cleaning, front desk.
Apartment rental$35-$70$490-$980Full kitchen, privacy. No on-site support.
Recovery house$100-$180$1,400-$2,520Room, meals, nursing checks, transport.

The apartment-to-recovery-house price gap is significant: $500 to $1,500 for the same duration. That gap buys real services (meals, transport, nursing) in a good recovery house. In a mediocre one, it buys a room that costs twice as much as it should. The vetting is what separates those two outcomes.

Our Recommendation by Situation

Solo traveler, cosmetic surgery, first time in Colombia: A well-vetted recovery house, recommended by your surgeon's clinic. The structured support justifies the premium when you do not have a companion and do not know the city.

Solo traveler, non-cosmetic procedure, comfortable traveling: An aparthotel. You get a kitchen, front desk support, and the ability to manage your own recovery without paying for cosmetic-specific services you do not need.

Traveling with a companion, any procedure: An apartment. Your companion provides the support a recovery house would, and the cost savings over two weeks are substantial. Use the checklist to vet the listing properly.

Short stay (under five days), any procedure: A hotel. The convenience outweighs the kitchen limitation for stays this short.

The hybrid approach

Some patients book a recovery house for the first three to five days (when support needs are highest) and then move to a cheaper apartment for the remainder of their stay. This gets you the post-op nursing support when it matters most, without paying recovery house rates for the entire trip. Discuss this with the recovery house before booking. Most will accommodate shorter stays, though the per-night rate may be higher.
